Nestled between two national parks at the northern end of the Bruce Peninsula, Tobermory is a picturesque Canadian harbor town that boasts thriving marine ecosystems, dense forests, and rocky coastal cliffs. Tobermory is also home to two beautiful harbors — Big Tub and Little Tub — where you can browse pretty shops among the bobbing local boats. Casual eateries and pubs are sprinkled throughout the Bruce Peninsula, with many offering views of the harbor to accompany the day’s catch.

Tobermory experiences distinct seasons. One of the best times to take in the region’s natural beauty is during the summer, when the temperatures are pleasant and the days are long. At the beginning of June, orchids bloom and adorn the trails and parks throughout the Bruce Peninsula. During the fall, Tobermory’s dense foliage transforms into spectacular shades of burnt orange, ochre, and crimson. Temperatures slowly dip during this time, especially at night, and can drop drastically during the winter, so warm clothing and sturdy footwear are strongly recommended if you’re planning to hit the trails or get out on the water. You can expect rain and snow throughout the fall and winter seasons — you’ll want to consider your choice of rental vehicle based on the conditions and your plans — before temperatures gradually rise with the arrival of spring.

Underwater at Fathom Five National Marine Park

Located in Georgian Bay, Fathom Five National Marine Park is a National Marine Conservation Area that’s part of Lake Huron. The park includes more than 20 preserved shipwrecks, a lighthouse, and diverse freshwater ecosystems. Glass-bottomed boat tours and scuba diving are some of the most popular ways to explore the waters surrounding Tobermory — the striking contrast of rusted ship hulls against the shimmering blue waters makes for a spectacular sight.

Flowerpot Island

Pack some snacks and water and make your way across the waters of the Georgian Bay to Flowerpot Island, where you can admire one of Tobermory’s natural attractions. The island gets its name from the natural rock sea stack formations that resemble flowerpots, which are strewn around the rocky shores. You can also explore the island’s many hiking trails and caves and find its pretty red and white light station.

Bruce Trail

Hike the end of Canada’s oldest and longest footpath for picturesque views of Tobermory’s verdant landscape. Tobermory marks the end of this famous trail, which starts in Queenston and spans nearly 522 miles. Along the way, you’ll encounter scenic lookouts offering spectacular views of Georgian Bay’s deep blue waters, rocky cliffs, and rich greenery.
